Special Child-Related Expenses (Section 7 Expenses)

Child-related expenses, such as private school or tutoring, daycare, orthodontics and similar out-of-pocket costs, are to be shared between the parties on a net-basis after deducting any tax deductions or increases in benefits. Spousal and child support can significantly lower or higher depending on these expenses.

We are no longer offering expense calculations through this calculator, as accurate calculations require more information than we can collect in this simplified interface. To calculate support with special expenses, use the Divorcepath child & spousal support calculator.

Step 3: Calculate

Calculate Spousal Support (Alimony)

By clicking "calculate" you acknowledge that this website does not provide legal advice, that many factors can and will affect spousal support (alimony) and child support calculations, that this calculator adjusts payments for certain typical circumstances only, does not account for all tax scenarios, and should not be relied on or presented in court without consulting a family lawyer. How to Calculate Child Support in British Columbia

B.C. child support is calculated using the Federal Child Support Guidelines and gross parental income. If children live with only one of their parents, only the income of the paying parent is taken into consideration. If the children live with each parent approximately the same amount of time, child support is calculated for each parent separately and the amounts are set-off against each other. The result is that only the higher earning spouse pays child support.

Child support claims can be very complex. Many issues can arise, including the calculation of income, eligibility of section 7 expenses (special expenses) and hardship claims. This website offers basic legal information only. For legal advice and representation in any child-support related matters, we recommend you consult an British Columbia family lawyer. A family lawyer can bring or defend a child support claim on your behalf, and make submissions to the court. Contact us for more information on what a family lawyer can do for you.
